Top 6 Best Epilators for 2019 [Buying Guide]

I’m just so excited to write this post on the best epilators for 2019!

I love trying different models even though I clearly have my favorite epilators (at the moment there are two devices that I use alternately).

And that’s what this is all about:

Everyone has different needs, expectations, tastes, and obviously different budgets.

Braun Silk Epil 9 epilator
Through my post,

I’m hoping that you will find the best epilator for you, no matter the budget, needs or expectations.

Here’s the deal:

Epilators are awesome because they offer smooth hair-free skin for at least a couple of weeks for a really affordable price!

That’s why you need to get the best epilator for women and enjoy using it for many years to come without having to spend another dime.

6 Best Epilators for Full Body, Legs, Bikini and Face

When it comes to choosing the best epilator for you, the good news is that there are just a few models that stand out so your choice should be quite easy.

My top 6 recommended models are for every budget:

  1. Philips hp6401 – is the best cheap epilator that you can get, you can’t expect much from it but it removes the hairs from the root with efficiency and precision, it’s corded and it will be with you for a long time
  2. Emjoi eRase e60 – is a truly affordable, powerful best epilator with 60 tweezers, corded, and it can be used on the whole body plus for facial hair removal
  3. Braun Silk Epil 5280 – is identical to the Silk Epil 7 only that the SE5 is: much cheaper, corded, and doesn’t come with the accessories that the SE7 does but all those accessories from the Silk Epil 7 fit the Silk Epil 5280
  4. Emjoi Emagine AP-18 – is almost expensive but totally worth it, even though it comes with literally no accessories, it makes up for it thanks to its speed due to having 72 tweezers, more than triple than the above model
  5. Braun 7561 – is cordless and there have been some who have reported battery malfunctions but it’s still an amazing epilator with the complete set of accessories, including a facial cap and a sensitive area cap so it can be used on the whole body plus face, whether you are a beginner or not
  6. Braun 9579 – is a better version of the above model, the tweezers are a bit different and the head is wider, it’s really fast but a bit painful, still cordless, but its biggest con is that it doesn’t have a sensitive area cap for the bikini area

My Favorite Model: Braun Silk Epil 9

Braun Silk Epil 9 is the complete package and one of the best epilators for women from my point of view.

What are the pros?

The Philips Satinelle HP6401 is definitely one of the best epilators for women.

In my opinion, there are very few other models that can beat its performances, taking into consideration the low price tag.

Why would you buy it?

Because it’s cheap and it offers hair-free skin for at least two weeks.

It’s obviously not the fastest model but the important thing is that it removes hairs from the root without breaking them at the surface of the skin. So the smoothness lasts.

That’s more than enough for women who want smooth skin without spending too much.

It has 21 tweezers so it’s not incredibly powerful.

Other features include:

  • an efficiency cap (great!)
  • 2 speeds in case you want the option of taking it slow in some areas
  • and a washable head (great again!)
  • it’s corded but the long cable gives you plenty freedom of movement

It doesn’t have a built-in light and this is its biggest con.

The alternative would be the Braun Silk-Epil 3170, which is more expensive only by a few dollars but has a light.

If you are looking for one of the best epilators for women for a really cheap price, then you should consider the HP6401 Satinelle!

Another con and the last one is that it doesn’t remove really short hairs efficiently.

That’s a thing that only more expensive models are good at.

But it’s not a tragedy, if you stick to epilating once every two weeks, you will still get awesome smoothness.

I wouldn’t recommend using the Philips Satinelle HP6401 for facial hair removal.

Besides that, you can use it to remove hair from your legs/underarms/bikini line/arms.

Emjoi eRase e60 Corded Cheap Epilator for Body + Face

The Emjoi eRase e60 is perfect for those who want a powerful best epilator at a really affordable price.

The thing is,

The Emjoi e60 is not only a powerful epiltor.

It’s much more than that.

It has 60 tweezers and that’s a lot, your hair removal will be done quickly.

The interesting aspect is that is also comes with a sensitive attachment.

It means that you can use this model to remove even hairs from the face.

It’s also good for those who want it for the bikini area.

It’s corded and it has two speeds.

It even comes with a shaver/trimmer attachment, it’s just the complete package.

The only thing lacking is the built-in light but that’s a small sacrifice for such an affordable price.

Braun Silk Epil 5280 Powerful Affordable Epilator for Body

Click On Photo to Learn More

The Braun Silk Epil 5280 is reliable and one of the best epilators of 2019.

It’s powerful and you will only need two passes to remove the hairs from your body.

It will be your best epilator for years to come without any worries.

All for a pretty affordable price tag.

It is the model on which the Braun Silk Epil 7 is based on. They’re basically identical when it comes to the tweezers head.

What does that mean?

It might come as a surprise but the accessories for the Silk Epil 7 fit the Braun Silk Epil 5280.

The 5280 is a corded epilator that only comes with a massage rollers attachment.

It also includes a shaver head and a trimmer cap.

But you can attach the sensitive area cap and the facial cap to the 5280 and transform into more than a powerful epilator for body, if you are thinking of doing that.

There are 2 speeds and a built-in light.

It also comes with a cooling glove but I definitely don’t recommend using that before epilation because the cold closes the pores.

Where to Buy?

Check Price & User Reviews Here

After epilation, you need to moisturize. Then you can use the cooling glove on the irritated skin if it brings you any comfort.

For me, it’s an unnecessary addition.

For this price, you get a powerful hair removal device that handles both coarse hairs and thin short ones.

There’s really nothing to complain about.

Emjoi Emagine AP-18 Powerful and Fast Epilator for Body

Click On Photo to Learn More

It’s the most powerful epilator on the market, when it comes to the number of tweezers, the Emjoi Emagine AP-18 has 72 tweezers!

It’s crazy, I know but it’s incredibly powerful.

The 72 tweezers are featured on dual opposed heads, which hold the skin taut so the risk of feeling more pain or the risk of getting ingrown hairs is diminished.

Another technology that helps with preventing ingrown hairs is the Silver Ion technology, which provides antimicrobial protection. It’s pretty cool.

Things don’t stop there.

There is also the Glide Technology together with the middle lifting fingers. It ensures that even the tiniest hairs are removed from the first pass. And the lifting fingers lift up the flat hairs.

Fewer passes are needed to get hair removed from the root, which also means that irritation may be less of a problem.

It’s a dry only epilator and corded.

It’s one of the best epilators for women for a mid price.

It’s totally worth it!

There are not many accessories for the Emjoi AP-18, there’s no efficiency cap and since many women have said that it’s one of the least painful best epilators, it turns out that you don’t need an efficiency cap.

It can be used as a facial epilator also, even though there is no special cap for that, either.

So it’s a whole body epilator for women.

There is no built-in light and that’s about it. That’s the only con that I can mention against Emjoi Emagine AP-18.

Braun Silk Epil 7561 High Price High Quality Epilator for Body + Face

Click On Photo to Learn More

The Braun Silk Epil 7561 is the high-end model in the world of epilators.

It’s one of the best epilators for women with a larger budget. Is it worth it?

Let’s see!

It removes hairs fast due to the fact that it’s quite powerful.

It removes hairs as tiny as 0.5mm thanks to its 40 tweezers that are close grip.

Being powerful, not many passes are needed, usually not more than two, until all the hairs are removed.

The second awesome thing is that this is a wet & dry epilator.

It takes 1 hour to charge and it will last up to 40 minutes. There’s a (-) sign that will let you know when it’s time for another charge.

If you feel like the pain is a little too much for you during those first epilation sessions, just jump in the shower so that your pores will open and the roots will come out more easily.

The Braun Silk Epil 7561 is the complete package!

It has a massage and pivoting head. There are also shaving and trimming heads. It’s a 3 in 1 system.

Without a doubt, it’s one of the best epilators for women.

Where to Buy?

Check Price & User Reviews Here

More importantly, there are 3 caps:

  • efficiency cap
  • facial cap
  • and a sensitive area cap for the bikini area and the underarms

It means that you can remove hairs from the root from almost any place on your body with this one single epilator.

Another helpful and practical feature is the built-in light alongside the 2 speeds.

There aren’t many cons to be mentioned against the 7561.

From my point of view, the fact that it’s cordless, it’s a con.

I am aware that it’s not possible because it’s a wet & dry epilator but it would have been better, in my opinion.

Since some users have complained about the fact that the battery for their device has stopped holding a charge after a given period of time.

Another con would be the high price tag but it’s justified by all the accessories, the features, the power, and the wet function.

Braun Silk-Epil 9579 One of the Top Epilators for Body & Face

Click On Photo to Learn More

There’s a new epilator in town and it’s pretty fabulous.

It’s the successor of the above epilator.

The 9 series shows noticeable improvements compared to the 7 series.

However, if you already have a Silk-Epil 7 model I don’t think there’s any point in changing it.

Before shortly reviewing the Braun 9579, I want to clear something up:

The Silk Epil 9 series has a lot of models but they all have the same epilator.

The difference between the various models is made by the accessories that come with every model.

That’s why I got the Braun Silk Epil 9561.

The difference between the 9561 and the 9579 is that my new and much liked best epilator doesn’t have a facial cleansing brush. Everything else is identical.

Thus, I’ve chosen the 9579  as one of the best epilators for women because it has a lot of accessories but you can search for another model.

The first thing that you’re going to notice about the 9 models is that they have a 40% wider head for covering more skin during epilation and speeding up the process.

That doesn’t mean that there are 40% more tweezers than those 40 tweezers of the Silk Epil 7 models.

There are still 40 tweezers.

The tweezers are different than those featured by the Braun Silk Epil 7.

They have a different shape, are positioned differently, and they’re longer.

They also have the microgrip technology for removing short hairs and the softlift tips for lifting flat-lying hairs.

Even so,

Not even the Silk Epil 9 can remove 100% of all the hairs.

Usually there are still going to be some left behind, that’s just how epilation works.

The accessories for the Braun Silk-Epil 9579 are:

  • massage rollers
  • pivoting head
  • skin contact cap
  • facial cap
  • shaving head and trimmer cap
  • facial cleansing brush
  • charging stand

You can use this model to remove hairs from the entire body (arms, bikini area, underarms, legs), including facial hair removal.

You can also shave or trim your hairs using the same device, by simply changing the head. And you can exfoliate with the facial cleansing brush.

It’s a wet & dry model that gets charged in 1 hour and works for 40 minutes. Charge it full every time. The battery life is really good.

It took 30 minutes to epilate my legs.

You might think that it took me too long but in fact I was surprised that the Braun 9 moves so fast.

The reason is that I didn’t epilate for about 3 weeks prior to using my new Silk Epil 9561.

The Braun Silk Epil 9 also has a built-in light and 2 speeds.

For facial hair removal I recommend using the first speed.

For the first time I removed my upper lip hair using an epilator and I’m going to keep doing it in the future, probably always on the first speed.

It was definitely painful but the good news is that the epilator works great.

It’s a very good facial epilator.

Last but not least,

I tried it under the shower too because the Silk Epil 9 is wet & dry. It doesn’t disappoint, the wet hairs stuck to the skin aren’t an obstacle.

The main things to be talked about when reviewing this new best epilator for women are:

  • it’s fast
  • powerful
  • the tweezers grab tiny thin hairs as well as coarse hairs
  • it’s great for body hair removal and one of the best epilators for face
  • works as a wet hair removal device
  • and it’s pretty

The first complaint is that the Braun Silk-Epil 9 models only function on battery, they don’t work corded.

This is a pretty expensive model even though the features and its efficiency justify the price but, still, not everyone can afford it.

There’s no sensitive area cap.

It’s a good accessory even for women who have a lot of experience with removing hairs from the bikini area.

I would not recommend it to someone who has just shaved their intimate area before and wants to switch to epilation directly.

It’s best to go to a waxing salon in the beginning and get used to that intense pain.

Which epilator is best for facial hair?

There are two ways to answer this question.

Let me make things a bit clear:

  • you can get a best epilator solely for removing facial hair, which is simply called a facial epilator
  • or you can get an epilator for body, with a lot more tweezers than a facial epilator has, that also comes with a facial cap

The facial cap does one simple thing:

It hides most of the tweezers because they are a lot, leaving exposed just a few of them to rotate and grab the hairs and pull them from the root.

Why is there a need for a facial cap?

Because, removing hairs from the face is really painful.

If all the tweezers that are used on the body remove them, then it’s going to be a lot more painful than it would be with a facial cap.

It’s for the same reason that a sensitive area cap is desirable when epilating the bikini area.

The skin on the face is really sensitive.

That doesn’t only translate in a painful process but also in the fact that it might get irritated and breakouts can appear after facial epilation.

Those are the two reasons.

That doesn’t mean that you cannot use an epilator for body to remove facial hair without a facial cap attached.

You can do that and there are a lot of women who do exactly that.

Even after all these years, I still prefer my facial cap and, after such a long time, the skin barely gets red let alone irritated.

One of the best facial epilator at the moment is the Emjoi Epi Slim e18.

Click On Photo to Learn More

It has 18 tweezers, which is quite a lot for a facial best epilator, considering that there are devices who have 6 tweezers.

It’s powerful but not more painful than a model with fewer tweezers.

It removes the hairs from the root without breaking them.

One of the most important aspects and why I really like the Emjoi e18 is that it removes both coarse and thin hairs.

It’s very important because there are a lot of women who have both.

You can have thin hairs on you upper lip but your chin hair can be coarse.

It’s very common.

Due to the fact that it has 18 tweezers, you can even use the Emjoi e18 as a best epilator for bikini and underarms.

It’s a fantastic little device that operates on 2 AA batteries.

There are two cons:

  • you need two AA batteries to make it work
  • and it doesn’t have a built-in light

If you want an epilator for body + face, take your pick from the best epilators that I reviewed above.

You can easily spot what you’re looking for.

Which is the best epilator for coarse hair?

Here’s the deal:

Most epilators are good at removing coarse hairs.

The problems arise when we’re talking about thin hairs because that’s when the tweezers struggle to grab the hairs and pull them from the root.

It’s the same case for hairs that are barely breaking the surface of the skin.

In addition,

Coarse hairs don’t break that easily so there’s not much risk that the epilator will cut them at the surface of the skin instead of pulling them from the follicle.

With all that being said,

Any of the above best epilator models are really good for coarse hairs.

If your main concern is coarse hairs,

Then I recommend first checking out the Emjoi AP-18. It’s truly amazing and powerful, the most powerful of them all.

If you want something a bit more affordable, then there’s the Braun 5280 and even the Emjoi e60 is a very good candidate.

If you want a cheap basic model, then the Philips hp6401 might be what you’re looking for.

What about the pain?

Epilation is painful.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it.

The pain is definitely present during each epilation, during each rotation of those tweezers that pull the hairs from their follicles.

That’s why it’s painful.

Epilation is a bit more painful than waxing. But not by a lot.

Moving from waxing to epilation is an easy to handle transition. The bit of extra pain won’t be uncomfortable.

Actually, you get used to it during your first session.

I can’t say the same from those who want to move from shaving to epilation.

That’s really painful and there are people who can’t handle the pain.

It’s perfectly normal to give up on epilation if the pain is too much for you. No one should suffer unnecessarily, not at all.

What can you do to minimize the pain?

  • take a hot shower before to open up the pores
  • exfoliate before each epilation
  • keep the skin taut (stretched)
  • keep your mind distracted from the pain, this is actually what helps me the most because not only distracts me from the pain but it also make the time pass a lot faster so there’s no risk of loosing my patience and rushing things (watch a movie, listen to music, talk to someone at the same time, listen to an audio book)
  • if you epilate your bikini area or the underarms, using a sensitive area cap helps a lot
  • moisturize immediately after epilation, you need to sooth the skin
  • as a final solution there are lidocaine creams that numb the skin from one to two hours, they’re also used when getting a tattoo

What to Look For when Buying the Best Epilator for You?

best epilator for women

1. Power

The power of an epilator is primarily given by how many tweezers it has.

The rule is: the more tweezers it has, the more hairs it removes from the root with a single pass.

Those tiny rotatory tweezers are the ones responsible for pulling the hair from the root.

That being said,

The Emjoi AP-18 is the most powerful epilator because it has 72 tweezers, being closely followed by the Braun SE7 and Braun Silk Epil 9 with their 40 tweezers that are incredibly powerful.

With those two devices, you will rarely need more than two passes for the hairs to be removed from the root.

Epilation is not as fast as shaving or depilatory creams but a more expensive more powerful epilator could speed up the process.

There are some women who complain about the fact that epilation it too slow but at least it’s a lot more simple than waxing.

2. Caps

Besides the number of tweezers, the caps that are included in the package are the second most important thing, in my opinion.

Low priced ones usually include an efficiency cap, like Philips HP6401 does.

I’ve been epilating for about 10 years or so and every model that I’ve used had an efficiency cap.

The pain is not so intense. A pretty nice sensation is created so I think it helps a good deal.

Even more:

An expensive best epilator for women will also include a sensitive cap or a facial one, meaning that you don’t have to get a separate epilator for facial hair.

You can use the same device for the entire body, whether from the neck down or from the neck up.

It’s a good way of saving money.

You can use an epilator to remove facial hair even if it doesn’t come with a facial cap. A lot of women do it.

It’s a lot more painful without a facial cap than it would be with one on.

It might cause irritation and breakouts because all tweezers make contact with the skin to remove the hairs from the root.

If your facial skin is used to waxing then the risk of breakouts or irritation is minimal.

3. Wet & Dry Epilator or Dry Only

Why would you prefer a wet & dry epilator?

Because it can be used under the shower or when taking a bath.

The hot water opens up the pores, which is a great method for reducing epilation pain.

If you’ve never waxed or used an epilator before, then you probably don’t know the intensity of the pain felt when so many hairs are removed from the root.

A wet & dry one might be just the thing you need in order to get you through those first epilation sessions.

4. Corded/Cordless

All wet & dry epilators are cordless, obviously.

As a rule, they run up to 40 minutes on a single charge and they take usually 1 hour to charge.

There are also dry cordless epilators – a great example is the Philips HP6576.

5. Built-in Light

It’s a great feature for making sure that all hairs are removed.

Emjoi seems to avoid including this feature for any of their epilators.

The loss is not substantial. You just need to epilate in a well illuminated room.

You can also use the Torch on your phone to thoroughly check for any missing hairs.

6. Washable Head

For the perfect hygiene most epilators have a washable head. Find more information on how to clean your device here.

A clean epilator will not guarantee that you won’t get any ingrown hairs ever again but it helps.

7. Additional Features

Such as a trimmer or shaving head.

These two heads, besides the tweezer head, can instantly transform an epilator into a shaving device or a trimming one.

It’s a 3 in 1 system for a very convenient price.

A massage head or a pivoting head are other practical and useful additions.

The only drawback for epilators is that they can cause ingrown hairs, just like shaving and waxing but the good news is that there are amazing products that prevent ingrown hairs.

Epilation and ingrown hairs

Epilators cause ingrown hairs. Just as shaving and waxing do.

When I used to shave, I didn’t get ingrown hairs.

In the beginning, for some years, I didn’t get them when epilating either.

But things changed, our body changes I suppose because I don’t see any other explanation.

Anyway, I started spotting ingrown hairs on my lower legs.

I become accustomed to exfoliation and the best products for ingrown hair removal.

Exfoliation is the only answer to keeping the hairs growing at the surface of the skin instead of under the skin.

They certainly don’t belong there, causing our skin to show dark dots.

Through exfoliation:

  • the dead skin cells are removed
  • the skin looks healthy and it helps maintain its firmness
  • while the hairs are easily able to break through the surface

There are two options:

  • physical exfoliation represented by products like scrubs, gloves, and loofahs
  • and chemical exfoliation named thus because the products used as exfoliators contain alpha-hydroxy acids or salicylic acid

I exfoliate almost daily.

Both dry and wet.

Meaning, I scrub my dry skin before starting the shower and after the shower when the skin is soft and the dead skin cells are easily removed, after which I rinse.

After each shower, I also moisturize but that’s because I have really dry skin.

I use argan oil because it is a non-comedogenic oil that nourishes the skin without blocking the pores.

I prefer natural products when taking care of my skin but you can use whatever works for you.

I have only used physical exfoliation – scrubs and exfoliation gloves – because my ingrown hairs are not that serious.

But if you have had them for a long time, you probably need chemical exfoliation.

Two of the best are the Pfb Vanish and the Tend skin solution.

Those products dry the skin in order to remove the dead skin cells and, finally, reveal the hairs that have grown under the skin.

If your skin gets too dry, you can use a scrub or a glove to restore its normal appearance.

After, you can moisturize.

Is an epilator better than waxing?

Epilators and waxing have a few things in common:

  • both remove the hairs from the root offering a smooth skin for at least two weeks
  • because the hairs are removed from the follicle, both hair removal methods are painful
  • both cause ingrown hairs

There are also a few aspects that set them apart:

  • epilation is a bit more painful than waxing

If you transition from waxing to using the best epilator for you then the adjustment period won’t be that long.

The slight difference in pain is a minor discomfort.

The only exception is facial hair removal.

For many years I used cold facial wax strips.

When I decided to try my new epilator that came with a facial cap, I discovered that the cold facial wax strips were a lot less painful.

But using an epilator for facial hair removal is fast so I got used to it after a few sessions.

If you are afraid of pain, for the face I recommend either threading or waxing.

Threading is great for sensitive skin, it minimizes the risk of breakouts and irritation.

In time,

You can use an epilator but it’s best to get the skin used to the hairs being removed from the root with the help of a slightly more gentle option like threading or waxing.

If neither of these three still painful methods appeals to you, there’s a completely pain-free option:

If you can use a special razor for face, like the Tinkle. It’s pretty amazing.

  • using an epilator is a lot more affordable

Even if you don’t wax at a beauty salon, which is really expensive, and you use hard wax at home, this method is still for expensive than epilation.

You buy an epilator and that’s it. There are no recurring costs for many years to come.

  • epilation is less messy than waxing
  • there’s no hair length to take into consideration as it is the case when waxing
  • using the best epilator for you is simple, you just need to move the device slowly against hair growth direction, while keeping the skin taut

Waxing is a bit more complicated than that.

It involves getting the temperature right and a good technique when pulling the strips.

Which one is better: epilation or waxing?

Neither method is better than the other.

It’s a matter of personal preferences. Some prefer using the devices with rotating tweezers, while others prefer waxing.

It’s important to choose the hair removal method that best suits your needs and is in your comfort zone, be it shaving, depilatory creams, epilation, waxing, laser hair removal or electrolysis.

If you choose epilation then my post is the perfect start to finding the best epilator for you.
