5 of the Best Ingrown Hair Products and Lotions (Creams)

I’m truly excited to share with you this list of the top 5 best ingrown hair products.

I’m definitely not happy that you have a problem with ingrown hairs, just as I do, but it has taken me some time until I discovered the appropriate products for preventing and getting rid of them and I hope that my knowledge will make things a lot easier to deal with.

Lesson No 1: Don’t Pick on your Ingrown Hairs

don't use tweezers to remove ingrown hair

That’s what ingrown hair removal products are for.

The good news first:

According to the NHS, in the majority of cases you will not have to see a GP for this problem.

The bad news:

Besides the itchiness and the bumps (mostly in the case of ingrown hairs that appear on the face in the case of men and in the bikini area mostly women are affected), they are aesthetically unpleasant.

They undermine our self confidence because we don’t like the way our skin looks.

We put effort into removing unwanted hairs in order to look good and feel good about how we look only to have that effort rewarded by hairs that don’t want to grow back at the surface how they’re supposed to.

It was how it affected me.

It only got worse after I started squeezing some of them and using a regular tweezers to remove them.

My legs got scarred and I felt even more horrible.

Those scars took a long time to heal, some where there after even 2 years. I have difficult skin that heals really slow.

That’s when I started doing proper research on what products I should use to remove and prevent them.

An Impressive Fact About Body Hair

At some point during my research on everything that relates to our bodily hair, I discovered a fact that made my jaw drop:

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, we are born with all the hair follicles we will ever have.

Well, the impressive fact is that there are about 5 million follicles with which we are born.

So,

There are about 5 million hairs on our body. Even considering that almost our entire body is covered in hair, from our cheeks to our toes, that’s still a lot.

I’m even more impressed that many women, myself included, remove so many hairs on a regular basis.

There are very few areas that I don’t attack with my epilator.

With all that,

When some naughty hairs transform into ingrown hairs, the situation gets annoying, to say the least.

There are solutions but that’s another thing to add to our list of things that need to done.

Nowadays,

It has become my routine but it can still be overwhelming to have another problem to deal with.

It has also taken me some time until I established what needs to be done to prevent ingrown hairs in the first place, to deal with the existing ingrown hairs that were already on my legs, and which are the best ingrown hair removal products.

What my Post is all About

I hope this article will make everything clear on some aspects:

  • what are ingrown hairs and why they appear
  • the main areas where they can appear
  • the best ingrown hair removal products according to my personal opinion and experience
  • and, last but not least, that it’s easier to prevent than to remove

If you are only interested in my recommendations for the best ingrown hair removal products skip this introductory info.

You will find the products a bit down below.

We work hard to keep our skin hair-free and the reward shouldn’t come in the form of hairs that don’t want to grow back to the surface of the skin.

How Ingrown Hairs Form

drawing about how ingrown hairs appear

According to Mayo Clinic, an ingrown hair appears when a shaved or tweezed hair grows back into the skin.

Hence, the name ingrown hairs. It cannot break the surface so the growth happens underneath the skin.

That can lead to:

  • tiny red bumps, also known as razor bumps
  • inflammation
  • itchiness, don’t scratch it because it might lead to infection
  • darkened skin
  • or simply a hair that can be clearly seen how it grows sideways under the skin

I would also add waxing and epilation to the list of hair removal methods that can lead to some hairs that grow underneath the skin.

Laser hair removal is indeed a hair removal method that doesn’t cause any ingrown hairs because the follicle is damaged so it can’t produce any more hairs.

In fact,

Ingrown hairs are a common condition that affects millions of people and they result from various hair removal methods.

Furthermore,

WebMD let us know that dead skin can clog up a hair follicle, which forces the hair to grow under the skin.

Removing dead skin cells is the obvious answer and that’s where my recommended ingrown hair removal products come into discussion.

The Most Common Areas to Get Ingrown Hairs

There are quite a few but it depends from person to person.

There’s no need to get scared.

For example,

I’ve only had ingrown hairs on my legs even though I use my epilator on almost all of my body, except chest, belly, and back, and I also use it for facial hair removal.

I haven’t had ingrown hairs in my intimate area or underarms and during my lifetime I’ve shaved, waxed, and finally settled on epilation.

You are more likely to get ingrown hairs in areas you shave, such as:

  • face and neck, which usually happens to men because their facial hair is coarse unlike our peach fuzz that grows back just as thin
  • legs, which I consider it to be the most frequent area to get them
  • underarms, it doesn’t happen to often in this area
  • chest, which once again applies mostly to men
  • back, the same as with the chest area
  • intimate area, which can be really uncomfortable and even painful than in other areas because the skin is really sensitive but the hairs are coarse and for some curly

Those with curly hair are more likely to get ingrown hairs.

Top 5 Ingrown Hair Products:

Whether you have ingrown hairs from shaving, waxing at home or from using an epilator, the certainty is that you have them.

These products work on all areas of the body regardless of which hair removal method you’re using to get rid of unwanted hairs.

I didn’t include a facial exfoliator because it should be chosen based on your skin type.

However,

I recommend using the Tend skin solution if you suffer from ingrown hairs on your face. It’s very good and easy to use.

Let’s see a few amazing ingrown hair removal products that actually work.

Actually,

I would say that prevention is the first step.

It’s not simple and it requires constant effort from your part, I know all too well about it but it’s totally worth it.

I am obsessed with matters of the skin because I’ve always had a lot of difficulties.

Even with prevention, you can’t expect that there won’t be any ingrown hairs ever.

That’s why you should know which are some of the best ingrown hair products.

It all comes down to exfoliation, which is further categorized as

Lesson No 2: Cases when you Need Both Physical and Chemical Exfoliators

If you have nasty ingrown hairs, hairs that have grown under the skin for a long time, the best method is to combine physical and chemical products.

How do you do that?

Apply a chemical product twice daily, which will make your skin peel like you’ve never imagined, removing the layers of dead skin cells.

Use a physical exfoliator so remove those dead skin cells and moisturize to keep your skin looking healthy and smooth.

As I’ve mentioned earlier,

It’s not easy but you can do it. It will quickly become your routine, just like all the other steps that you take in tending to your skin.

My Top Pick: Earth Therapeutics Exfoliating Gloves

I’m using exfoliating gloves almost daily when I take a shower, as I mentioned earlier exfoliation is key to preventing ingrown hairs.

I also use a body scrub daily but you don’t have to go to those extremes.

It’s just that I have a difficult skin. It matches my personality, I guess.

You can use either gloves or a scrub after taking a shower. Rinse afterwards and that’s it, that’s your routine for preventing ingrown hairs.

5 Best Ingrown Hair Products to Get Rid of Them

In my list of my favorite ingrown hair products I’ve included a mix of physical exfoliators, 2 very good chemical exfoliators that work on the whole body and face, they won’t harm the skin no matter how sensitive it is, and even a pair of tweezers designed for picking on ingrown hairs without scarring.

Nevertheless,

The tweezers should be your last solution. I’m still afraid of infections, although I’ve never had one, so take this step with all the precautions necessary.

1. PFB Vanish + Chromabright 93G

I cannot start a review on some of the best ingrown hair products without first talking about the PFB Vanish.

Why is that?

Because when it comes to eliminating ingrown hairs with lotions or creams, this product is at the top of the list.

It should do its job whether you have bad ingrown hair problems or if you are like me and you just have some tiny ones that look like really tiny black dots.

It should also eliminate those dark spots that usually happen after shaving and scarring, too.  The Chromabright part is for evening the skin tone.

It’s definitely one of the best ingrown hair products.

And it can be used on any area of the body – legs, bikini line, face, underarms, and so on.

The PFB Vanish is a roll on, fragrance-free, you will only feel the smell of alcohol. When using it, simply roll the PFB Vanish on your skin.

If you want to rub it in a little, I advise you to use some gloves. That’s indicated because this ingrown hairs eliminating product dries and peels the skin. If you touch it, your hands might peel, too.

Why does it contain ingredients that peel the skin? That’s simple. Through peeling, the layers of dead skin are efficiently removed, exposing the hairs that were laying underneath.

Simply put,

It aggressively exfoliates the skin. It also contains camphor for preventing infections.

How often should you use it?

Well, some people use it daily after taking a shower, others only use it after shaving, waxing or epilating. It’s up to you, depending on the severity of the ingrown hairs that are hidden underneath your skin.

2. Earth Therapeutics Hydro Exfoliating Gloves

PFB Vanish is a good product that works. Those of you who have suffered from ingrown hairs for a long time, should definitely give it a try.

For the rest of you, who would prefer other options, I have three more suggestions.

Let’s start with my favorite ingrown hair eliminating/preventing product – exfoliating gloves.

The Earth Therapeutics Hydro Exfoliating Gloves may be a great solution for you and that’s why they come second on my list for some of the best ingrown hair products.

As the name says, these are specially-made gloves for exfoliating the skin. They help by getting rid of dead cells.

Dead skin cells prevent the hairs from breaking to the surface, staying under the skin and growing there. They act like a wall that stands between the newly growing hairs and the surface of the skin.

Once you eliminate the dead skin, the hair can grow to the surface easily and the problem is solved.

I exfoliate almost daily.

It helps a lot with my dry skin. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have a lovely skin at all. At the same time using exfoliating gloves won’t harm your skin, they don’t leave you with scratches after.

3. Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub

I love body scrubs not only because they are one of the best ingrown hair products out there but also because they leave your body feeling smooth and smelling wonderful.

I like alternating between using an exfoliating glove and a body scrub. The glove is wonderful but the scrub is just as great.

It doesn’t only reduce the ingrown hairs appeared after shaving or waxing or epilation but it also eliminates redness, razor bumps, and prevents irritation.

It’s a great product for men and women, alike.

I would recommend using it after shaving, waxing or epilation in order to obtain the best results. You can apply the solution using a cotton ball.

It works well on any part of the body, be it face, underarms, bikini area, legs, and so on.

It can only be used on dry skin and you should test it before using it. Just apply the Tend Skin Care Solution on a small portion and leave it on for 5 minutes.

5. Majestic Bombay – Stainless Steel Ingrown Hair Tweezers

This is the final solution, the last resolve.

It’s for ingrown hairs that simply won’t come out no matter what you do.

When this happens the only thing left to do is to get a pair of tweezers, dip it in alcohol and go hunting:-)

This particular pair of tweezers is quite effective because it was specifically designed for ingrown hairs and splinters. It has those elongated sharp tips that easily grab tiny hairs.
